Skeptoid.com ---> Episode Guide

I discovered skeptoid while browsing I-tune's pod casts. Brian Dunning does a great job exposing the fallacies behind creationist claims and other pseudo sciences. Here are a few I think are valuable for those of us who want to improve our debating skills.

How to Argue with a Creationist

Eleven of today's standard arguments we hear from creationists, with standard rebuttals.

Evolution is just a theory, not a fact.

Evolution is controversial; scientists disagree on its validity.

Evolution is not falsifiable, therefore it's not science.

Evolution is itself a religion.

Evolution cannot be observed.

There is an absence of transitional fossils.

Evolution violates the second law of thermodynamics.

Evolution cannot create complex structures with irreducible complexity.

It's too improbable for complex life forms to develop by chance.

Evolution cannot create new information.

Evolution does not explain some aspects of life or culture.

A Magical Journey through the Land of Logical Fallacies - Part 1

Part 1 and 2 describe twenty of the most common Logical Fallacies. These are found everywhere in creationist arguments.Watching Fox News is a great way to practice spotting them also.

The Straw Man Argument

Ad Hominem

Appeal to Authority

Special Pleading

Anecdotal Evidence

Observational Selection

Appeal to Ignorance

Non-Sequitur

Post Hoc

Confusion of Correlation and Causation

Slippery Slope

A Magical Journey through the Land of Logical Fallacies - Part 2

Excluded Middle

Statistics of Small Numbers

Weasel Words

Fallacy of the Consequent Fallacy of the Consequent

I think the work Brian Dunning is doing is very important. Yesterday I gave him a small donation plus a few bucks every month.

Most people are taught what to think without ever learning how to think. Skeptoid is a great site to learn the basics of critical thinking and it's entertaining.
